Background and Experience

Fred Tranfield is an internationally certified yoga teacher (Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher™) who has been teaching yoga classes and workshops globally since 1996.

Originally he was a dedicated student of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, practicing up to three hours a day, six days a week. He fell under the influence of Iyengar Yoga when he moved to the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California where he started teaching regular yoga classes.

While living at Esalen he continued his intensive yoga practice, deepening his knowledge through the study of Vinyasa in Ashtanga Yoga coupled with the body alignment and prop based approach of Iyengar Yoga.

:: Embracing the Eclectic
Esalen is an educational retreat center. It regularly hosts some of the world's renowned teachers of the somatic disciplines. During his tenure at Esalen Fred was fortunate to study with a variety of yoga masters who came and led retreats there, giving him a respectful insight into many popular yoga styles. Fred also studied under a broad array of the dance, music and movement leaders who taught there.

:: To India and Beyond
In 2000 Fred left Esalen to study yoga (primarily Ashtanga) in Auroville, India, and, after that, Mysore, India. He eventually returned to the U.S. and moved to Los Angeles where he continued to teach classes, workshops and study yoga under the many senior teachers who are resident or visit Los Angeles as well as continuing his intensive Ashtanga practice under the guidance of Chuck Miller and Maty Ezraty of YogaWorks.

:: A Blending of Somatic Widsoms
Fred created SaundaryaYoga to create health and balance. Fred feels that while dogma has its place in the world, the ultimate healing and balance experience is built on persistent curiosity, humility, and trust in oneself. SaundaryaYoga is a dynamic expression of somatic disciplines, taking key benefits from many forms of somatic styles and blending them in to a yoga practice.

Today Fred is living in Japan with his wife and two small children, teaching English full time. He continues to teach yoga and lead workshops globally. He came to Japan in 2003 to learn Japanese and start a family. He is currently seeking a sponsor in Japan to help him start teaching yoga full time.
